Director’s Update – October 31, 2021
Dear Wabun Family,
I love the stillness of the fall and winter months and do my best dreaming this time of year. In early morning moments of quiet, over a first cup of coffee, my mind flows slowly, like a river under ice, swirling around in eddies of Wabun memories – morning fires on special campsites, paddle strokes through misty waters. And then, gaining momentum, memory morphs into imagination as the river of mind moves into the uncharted waters of the Wabun season to come – new feet walking old trails through ancient pines, wilderness companions deepening their bonds through shared challenges and accomplishments, the magnified awareness, emotion, and appreciation born of paddle, pack, and path. I always enjoy these months of anticipation; waiting to welcome so many kindred souls to Wabun to share profound joy in simple pursuits. Never have I felt the pull north more strongly than I do this fall.
On September 30th the Wabun leadership team joyfully opened registration for Wabun’s 90th season. We have been blown away by the volume of returning campers and families who have already signed up for the summer of 2022. It is with gratitude and great enthusiasm that we prepare to welcome back these young people yearning to venture together once again into wild spaces. Equal to that enthusiasm is our eagerness to expand our welcome to young people who have not yet experienced the wonder of a Wabun summer, to those who have not yet heard of us and what we do. No one knows better how Wabun can bring joy and strength to a child than our alumni and the parents, grandparents, and extended family of the young people who paddle our red canoes. The stories you share about Wabun with friends, acquaintances, and associates create an authentic and powerful promotion of Wabun. Won’t you please help us fill our canoes next summer with kids yearning for connection with one another and the nourishment of nature?
There is no effort to spread the word of Wabun that is more effective than word-of-mouth from you, our Wabun Family. We ask for your help in moving us forward in this last decade of our first hundred years. Below you will find the 2021 Fall Open House schedule listing the location (online and in-person), dates, and times of each event. Come! Connect! Call a friend who might be interested in what we do and invite them to join you. I would like to take a moment to highlight the Alumni Gathering scheduled on Monday, November 1st at 8pm Eastern Time. If you were ever a Wabun camper or staff, please be sure to Zoom in and join us that evening. We would love nothing more than to spend a little time with you catching up and sharing stories. You can register by visiting our Open House page or by clicking the links below.
Lastly, there is little that brightens my day more than a call, text, or email from you, my Wabun Family – you are always most welcome to contact me for any reason at all. I do my best to keep this community apprised of camp happenings; if you have not been receiving Wabun updates by email, please take a moment to update your contact information using this form. You can also connect with us on Instagram and Facebook @campwabun.
Until the paths of our paddles cross again, keep the red side down!
Warmly,
Jess
